Oiled Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, Cat Island, off Louisiana

Oiled Heron
Our excessive gas and oil usage leads to excessive drilling and to horrible spills. The vast majority of oil spills don't make national news. You can't appreciate just how many oil spills there are in the U.S. unless you get a Google Alert for "oil spill." The daily emails are extraordinarily depressing.

  4. The oiled yellow-crowned night-heron in the photo is just one of many animals that were affected by the spill. Thousands of birds, mammals, and reptiles were killed by the oil, and many more were injured. The spill also caused widespread damage to coastal habitats, including wetlands and mangroves. The photo of the oiled yellow-crowned night-heron is a powerful reminder of the importance of protecting our environment from oil spills. We must do everything we can to prevent future spills and to clean up the damage that has already been done.
